Our partnership with the South African Weather Service (SAWS)
Improving the protection of the public and businesses against lightning strikes is the main objective of this new partnership with the SAWS.
We are delighted to announce an impactful new partnership between the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and METEORAGE.
This public-private partnership represents a significant commitment to saving lives, property and industry in South Africa.
Why is this important? Lightning is one of the deadliest weather phenomena in South Africa, claiming an estimated 264 lives every year.
The partnership will use METEORAGE’s cutting-edge technology and expertise to enhance the existing South African Lightning Detection Network (SALDN).
South African users will benefit from essential new services including:
- Improved lightning forecasting and warning,
- real-time monitoring and analysis of severe weather events,
- Targeted initiatives to mitigate lightning-related risks in various sectors.
METEORAGE’s lightning data services will now be available to SAWS customers, enabling them to make informed decisions and mitigate the risks associated with lightning and thunderstorms.
Solid foundations for the future
According to Ishaam Abader, Managing Director of SAWS: “[…] we are pleased to partner with METEORAGE, a global authority in lightning detection. This collaboration will greatly enhance our lightning safety efforts for our citizens, as well as for industries critical to our economy, such as aviation, energy and others.”
Our President, Dominique Lapeyre de Chavardès, confirmed that “most economic and human activities are sensitive to thunderstorms, and our mission is to provide decision-making tools to mitigate the risks to lives and property. I am very proud of this public-private partnership with SAWS, illustrating our shared commitment to achieving this.”
